Our video reveals: how a big boot is born

Those who walked through Oscar Freire Street, in Sao Paulo, or saw the pictures of Galeria Melissa’s façade (which since the beginning of June includes a huge reproduction of a new Melissa model created by Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid), could hardly avoid the question: how is a big boot born???

Well, we tell you the process is not easy. The reproduction, totally faithful to Zaha’s Melissa, was made of resin, in a 100% handmade process with different stages of mounting and finishing that was registered in video by us. And now, here it is, available for the curious ones.

See the video and leave your comments… But please don’t try it at home ...

Gladiators: this summer’s best

Whoever is paying attention on the last red carpet events knows that the shoe of the moment is the gladiator sandal. Wanna an example? Actress Gwyneth Paltrow was the queen of every photograph on Cannes Film Festival, last May, as well as in some other casual occasions, wearing hers.

Gisele Müller’s Brazilian blog, Moda e Estilo Online, has presented a selection of powerful gladiators, in Brazil and abroad, as well as of celebrities that have been wearing the shoe – which is absolutely in. Melissa Mistery, a new model of the Summer 2009 collection, was one of Gisele’s highlights.

For those who are fond of gladiators, Melissa Mistery will be soon available in stores. Don’t miss it ;-) ...

The model of the moment is English, has short blond hair and – to leave no doubt she has an outstanding personality – catches all attention outside catwalks and studios.

Agyness Deyn, who is 25 years old and has a parallel career as a singer, is stylish and has been redefining British girls’ closets with her classical-street-modern looks. And it is exactly for being fashion-conscious that she grabs one campaign after another (including Burberry’s, which had Kate Moss before, and also the campaign of the brand’s new perfume, The Beat), has been chosen the best model of 2007 in the British Fashion Awards and is a friend of every cool fashion designer in London.

Vivienne and Melissa in Dazed&Confused Japan

For fashion outsiders to be pleased, the July/August edition of Dazed&Confused Japan has Vivienne Westwood as the invited editor. The English fashion designer brought her manifesto “Active Resistance to Propaganda” – in which she talks about a conscious consumer that doesn’t go with the flow, but is guided by his/her own attitudes – to the pages of a magazine that is among the most interesting and modern today. Along with Vivienne, this edition has a special report about the Melissas created by the designer.
SPFW Winter 2008: the highlights

This was, without a doubt, a strong and diversified edition (the 24th) of the Sao Paulo Fashion Week. On the catwalk, 40 brands presented their Winter 2008 collections.
On the web – and at SPFW - we meet

The time when you needed to send a little letter to set up a super-meeting is long gone. There´re not even phone calls anymore! Now the thing is to do it like the girls of the Melissa Original Orkut community, who have set up an internet meeting for all the girls to go to the SPFW and get to see the Melissa collection first hand. They had never met each other in person.

Among the 135 thousand members (!!), are foxies: Priscilla, Evelyn, Carol, Martinha, Vanessa, Clebia, Rosana, Natalie e Andréa – all from the state of Sao Paulo, but none of them from the state’s capital. They arranged the trip to the Bienal all by themselves, since some of the girls were winners of previous Melissa ...

Poll: What´s gonna happen to skinny?

Another poll for you folks: skinny pants, that tight little model, beloved by people into the rocker style (just think of Mick Jagger), cooler than cool, is still cooler than cool or… could it disappear from the closets of men and women?

The matter of the fact is that skinny reached such success among “regular people”, that fashion enthusiasts were scared of so many pairs all over the place, so that now they decided to migrate to the large pants wave. But, that statement isn’t a 100% accurate; after all, today what counts in fashion is the style and the desires of each individual. Therefore, be cool if your “fashion self” enjoys the model.

Question is weather or not skinny will keep ...

It´s time to manifest

I make the great claim for my manifesto, that it penetrates to the root of the human predicament and offers the underlying solution. We have a choice: to become more cultivated, and therefore more human - or by not choosing, to be the destructive and self-destroying animal, the victim of our own cleverness (To be or not to be).

In the reading she made yesterday (Friday) of her manifest against propaganda and the excessive consume, fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, 67, spent most of the time chatting with friends and guests and posing for pictures.

“I´m not interested in talking to the media, that only wants to know about what is shallow, said Vivienne, who had previously ...

Novelty: new Sweet Lips by Isabela Capeto

Isabela Capeto opted out of the official line-up of this SPFW, but she is well inside the new Melissa collection – and, for her brand’s new collection, she prepared a beautiful showground with the winter 2008 looks in her store in Sao Paulo.

Isabela’s novelty for Melissa is the doll styled flat with tiny little holes, which is back this season for the hyped retro look enthusiasts. Melissa Sweet Lips + Isabela Capeto is feminine, very comfortable and full of swing. With a strap on the ankles, it guarantees not only a safe walk, but also a touch of delicacy to this flat that is all about Isabela Capeto.

Where is diversity?

We have said here before that the general theme of this edition of the SPFW is diversity. Inspired by what they call “The XXI century Babel”, the organizers of the event elected set designer Daniela Thomas and architect Felipe Tassara to create a paper town, as diverse and cosmopolitan as Sao Paulo – including a real “Babel” tower right beside the Bienal ramp, where the official media was installed.

Meanwhile, at the fashion shows’ backstage – and main web-sites, newspapers and magazines that have been covering fashion, the issue is the model castings’ lack of diversity. There are few black models working for the almost 40 brands in this edition of the event and very few Asian ...

The lounge created by architect Marcelo Rosembaum, who’s been working for the brand for a few seasons now, was made to transport its visitors through an imaginary trip, a result of other trips, both real and imaginary.
Relaxed Friday at the park, third day of fashion shows, and things are getting agitated at the Bienal! Today the SPFW got started with an external presentation: Reinaldo Lourenço brought the fashion enthusiasts to FAAP, Higienópolis neighborhood, in Sao Paulo, to tell a story of cowboys (better yet, cowgirls) modern and absolutely connected to their time. At the Bienal, the agenda was opened with Giselle Nasser and her precious dresses, followed by men’s wear (quite sober this winter) and Mario Queiroz. A partner of the brand for some good seasons now, Alexandre inspired himself in the mix of the feminine and masculine universes – the androgynous universe, theme of his previous summer 2008 collection – to create Melissa Joy, classic men’s shoes full of glow and created for powerful women.

After all, every good idea is born from disorder, especially if the idea has something to do with fashion, which is a space where many subjects meet.

SPFW’s organization made it clear in this edition of the event, inspired by the “The Babel of the XXI Century”, that the main fashion week of the country (and Latin America) is a meeting space that was born from that apparent miscommunication (chaos).
The hot news of yet another SPFW

The atmosphere, somewhat different from the previous seasons, is one of Professionalism with a capital “P” – mixed, of course, with that fashion euphoria of discovering the next season novelties (and, truth be told, take a pick at the productions of others).

Explaining the phenomenon: Brazilian fashion is going through an unprecedented moment in its history, with the acquisition of the main national brands by investors groups. A bit bombastic, the latest news regarding the issue was the acquisition, this month, of brands Alexandre Herchcovitch and Fause Haten by the holding I’M Identidade Moda, of the entrepreneurs Enzo Monzani ...
